Balfour-Hood Center
Wheaton’s student center, the Balfour-Hood Center, is a hub of activity from morning till night. Here you’ll find the offices of Residential Life, Campus Mail Services and Student Activities, Involvement and Leadership (SAIL)—which oversees the college’s more than 100 student organizations. Balfour-Hood is also home to the Wheaton Campus Bookstore, the Club Hub sponsored by the Student Government Association, the Wheaton Wire student newspaper and the student-run radio station, WCCS 96.5 FM, which has been on the airwaves since 1978. Dance and fitness classes are held at Ellison Dance Studio, and the Thomas A. Pappas Fitness Center offers a variety of exercise machines and free weights to meet the campus’ fitness needs. The Hood Café sells coffee and a serve-your-own salad bar as well as hot food options, available with cash, credit or with the Lyons Swipe meal plan. The Lyons Den hosts live entertainment and student organization events. Built in 1940 as the Student Alumnae Building, the Balfour-Hood Center was renovated and expanded in 1986 and rededicated in honor of friends of the college Lloyd G. and Mildred Balfour and former college trustee Gilbert Hood.
